Underwater Drone Assists Gibraltar Customs in Seizing 120kg of Cocaine from Bulk Carrier

In a significant drug interdiction operation, HM Customs in Gibraltar seized 120 kilograms of cocaine concealed aboard the Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier M/V Great Zhou. The vessel had arrived from Santos, Brazil, for a routine bunkering stop on April 30, 2025. Utilizing a recently acquired underwater drone, customs officers conducted an extensive search of the ship, leading to the discovery of four suspicious packages hidden in the port-side sea chest. The packages were retrieved and found to contain the illicit substance.

Following the seizure, all crew members were interviewed, and a comprehensive search of the vessel was conducted. Upon completion, the ship was released to continue its voyage, with investigations into the origin and intended destination of the drugs ongoing. Authorities believe that Gibraltar was not the final destination for the narcotics, suggesting the operation disrupted a broader smuggling route.

The Collector of Customs, John Payas, commended the officers involved, highlighting the effectiveness of the underwater drone technology, which was acquired in December 2024. Chief Minister Fabian Picardo also praised the operation, emphasizing Gibraltar’s commitment to combating international drug trafficking through strategic investments in law enforcement capabilities.

This successful interdiction underscores the growing role of advanced technology in maritime security and the ongoing efforts to thwart illicit drug trafficking operations.
