A 60-year-old British man, James Messham, tragically died following an altercation aboard the MSC Virtuosa cruise ship on May 3, 2025. The incident occurred approximately two and a half hours after the vessel departed Southampton, UK, en route to Bruges, Belgium. The altercation took place around 8:30 p.m. while the ship was still in British waters. Mr. Messham, a grandfather and former motorbike stunt performer known for his work with Carter’s Steam Fair, was reportedly part of a stag party. An on-board army medic attempted to treat him, but he succumbed to his injuries.
Upon the ship’s return to Southampton, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary arrested a 57-year-old man from Exeter on suspicion of murder. The suspect was later released on bail as investigations continue. Authorities are appealing for witnesses aboard the ship who may have observed the altercation or have related information to come forward.
The MSC Virtuosa, which can accommodate over 6,000 guests and has a crew of 1,704, had made a two-night stop in Bruges before returning to Southampton. MSC Cruises confirmed the incident, stated their cooperation with authorities, and offered support to those affected.
The cruise had a festive atmosphere, with multiple stag and hen parties on board. Witnesses described the environment as chaotic, with excessive drinking contributing to a “modern Wild West” ambiance.
This incident marks the second fatal event aboard the MSC Virtuosa in recent months. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Mr. Messham’s death
