Observance day

World Oceans Day

8 June 2026

United Nations observance held every 8 June to raise awareness of the oceans and the need to protect marine environments, including from shipping impacts such as plastic litter, noise and greenhouse-gas emissions.

Why it matters

Recognised by the UN in 2008. Relevant to shipping through MARPOL Annex V (garbage), the IMO's strategy on marine plastic litter from ships, and ballast-water and biofouling management.
