The 82nd session of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 82) adopted key amendments to MARPOL Annex VI under the revised GHG Strategy, including a new net-zero framework for international shipping by 2050.
Why it matters
MEPC 82 finalised the 2023 IMO Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships, setting binding checkpoints of 20% reduction by 2030 (striving for 30%) and 70% by 2040 (striving for 80%) relative to 2008 levels.
