In a pioneering move for maritime decarbonisation, CALCAREA Inc. and AURELIA Design B.V. announced a collaboration aimed at integrating ocean-based carbon capture technology directly into vessel design.
The partnership will combine CALCAREA’s novel limestone weathering carbon-removal process—where CO₂ reacts with seawater and limestone to create stable bicarbonates—with AURELIA’s expertise in green ship design and systems integration. According to the announcement, the two firms will work on a next-generation bulk carrier concept that embeds the carbon-capture reactor and supporting systems without compromising cargo capacity or ship performance.
Phase 0 of the project, a feasibility and concept study, is already underway. The study will assess seawater flow dynamics, vessel intake/discharge configurations, hull implications, and class-compliance engineering for operational deployment.
