he Horn of Africa is once again witnessing a troubling reminder of a dark chapter in maritime history — piracy. Following a recent attack on a commercial tanker near the Somali coast, the European Union has deployed a naval warship under Operation Atalanta to ensure the safety of ships sailing through the region
Early Monday morning, reports surfaced that a commercial oil tanker was attacked near the Somali coastline. Armed men in a small skiff opened fire and attempted to board the vessel. Fortunately, the crew managed to evade the attackers, and the ship left the area safely.
This marks one of the first such incidents since 2024, signaling a worrying resurgence of pirate activity. The same week, a Seychellois fishing vessel came under attack from a high-speed skiff, and an Iranian fishing boat was reportedly hijacked by unidentified assailants.
In response, the EU Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) immediately dispatched a warship under Operation Atalanta to the region. While the mission confirmed awareness of the situation, it refrained from releasing operational details for security reasons.
