On the evening of May 17, 2025, the Mexican Navy’s training vessel, ARM Cuauhtémoc, collided with the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City, leading to the deaths of two crew members and injuries to at least 22 others.
The Cuauhtémoc, a 300-foot tall ship with masts reaching approximately 147 feet, was departing from South Street Seaport as part of its annual transcontinental voyage marking the completion of cadet training. While maneuvering away from Pier 17, the vessel experienced a mechanical failure, causing it to lose power and drift uncontrollably. Strong currents and wind conditions contributed to the ship’s unintended course, leading it to strike the underside of the Brooklyn Bridge.
The collision resulted in the deaths of a 21-year-old female cadet, América Yamileth Sánchez, and a male Marine, Adal Jair Marcos. At least 22 others sustained injuries, with several reported in critical condition. Emergency responders, including the NYPD Harbor Unit and SCUBA teams, promptly arrived at the scene to provide assistance.
