On April 28, 2025, China achieved a significant milestone in its maritime industry with the successful float-out of its second domestically built large cruise ship, the Adora Flora City. Constructed by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (SWS), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), the vessel was commissioned by Adora Cruises, a Chinese cruise line formerly known as CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping.
The float-out ceremony, completed by 7:30 a.m., marked the transition of the ship from dry dock to water, signifying that over 70% of its construction is complete. This phase indicates that the hull is largely finished, and the vessel will now enter the stages of interior outfitting and system testing.
The Adora Flora City is part of China’s ambitious efforts to establish itself in the global cruise shipbuilding market, traditionally dominated by European shipbuilders. Compared to its predecessor, the Adora Magic City, this new vessel features optimized designs and a larger size, reflecting advancements in China’s shipbuilding capabilities.
Construction of the Adora Flora City began in August 2022, with delivery expected by the end of 2026. Upon completion, the ship is slated to operate from Guangzhou, offering international cruise services.
This development underscores China’s growing expertise in complex shipbuilding projects and its commitment to expanding its presence in the global cruise industry.
