China’s shipbuilding industry has achieved a significant milestone with the construction of its first large methanol dual-fuel container vessel, marking a pivotal step towards sustainable maritime operations.
The vessel, named COSCO SHIPPING Yangpu, is the inaugural ship in a series of methanol dual-fuel container ships built by COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry Yangzhou for COSCO SHIPPING Holdings. Measuring 366 meters in length and 51 meters in width, it boasts a maximum capacity of 16,136 TEUs. This ship is designed to meet the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) Phase III standards, aiming to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 8.9% compared to conventional vessels.
Equipped with an ultra-large methanol storage tank, the vessel can complete a one-way voyage from the Far East to the West Coast of the United States operating solely on methanol fuel.
The development of this vessel aligns with COSCO Shipping Lines’ commitment to green and low-carbon strategies, contributing to the construction of an alternative fuels-powered fleet.
This advancement underscores China’s dedication to reducing the maritime industry’s carbon footprint and promoting the adoption of cleaner alternative fuels in global shipping.
