Gunmen In Small Boats Fire At Vessel Off Yemen, Investigation Underway

A merchant vessel navigating the Red Sea near Yemen came under attack from gunmen in small boats, prompting a swift response from international naval forces. The incident is part of a series of maritime security challenges in the region.

The vessel, identified as the Maersk Hangzhou, was targeted by four small boats operated by Iranian-backed Houthi militants. The attackers attempted to board the ship, leading to an exchange of fire with the vessel’s contracted security team. U.S. Navy helicopters from the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower and USS Gravely responded to the distress call, issuing verbal warnings before being fired upon. In self-defense, the helicopters returned fire, sinking three of the four boats and killing their crews; the fourth boat retreated.

This incident underscores the escalating threats to commercial shipping in the Red Sea, a vital corridor for global trade. The U.S. Navy’s involvement highlights the international community’s commitment to ensuring maritime security in the face of increasing aggression from Houthi forces.

An investigation into the attack is ongoing, with authorities examining the circumstances and potential implications for regional security. The incident has prompted discussions on enhancing protective measures for vessels transiting through high-risk areas.
