US Navy Awards $2.1 Billion Contract For Nuclear Reactor Components
US company BWX Technologies (BWXT) has won contracts for the US Navy’s nuclear propulsion program totaling approximately $2.1 billion to manufacture nuclear reactor components.
Manufacturing and material procurement activities for the Navy’s nuclear reactor components for Columbia- and Virginia-class submarines and Ford-class aircraft carriers will be performed at BWXT facilities in Lynchburg, Virginia; Barberton and Euclid, Ohio; and Mount Vernon, Indiana.
The contract will begin in 2023 and will be effective for approximately seven years.
In addition to these contracts, the company was awarded a contract for fuel production, delivery and support activities for the US Navy’s nuclear propulsion program, which is operated by Tennessee-based Nuclear Fuel Services.
The fuel contract, valued at approximately $300 million, was awarded and announced in October 2023 and is scheduled to be completed this year.
Submarine reactors being developed and built today are designed to last the same lifetime of the ship, while aircraft carrier reactors are designed to be refueled only once during their lifetime.
“For more than 70 years, BWXT has proudly supported the U.S. Navy’s mission to defend freedom and maintain security around the world,” said Gary DeKamper, president of BWXT’s Nuclear Operations Group.
“These contracts represent not only our unmatched expertise in naval nuclear power, but also our commitment to providing the Navy with the tools necessary to ensure the oceans remain free and open.”
