Energy Efficiency Design Index

Also known as: EEDI

An IMO design-based index measuring CO₂ efficiency of a new ship, expressed in grams of CO₂ per tonne-mile.

Status: ActiveVerified: Source confidence: high (96%)

Full Definition

The EEDI (MARPOL Annex VI, Regulation 20) applies to new ships from 2013. It calculates theoretical CO₂ per unit of transport work at design speed based on installed power and cargo capacity. Phase 0–3 requirements impose progressively tighter limits: Phase 3 (from 2025) demands a 30% improvement over the Phase 0 baseline for most ship types. EEDI has driven slow-speed designs, waste heat recovery, propeller efficiency devices, and LNG propulsion on newbuildings.
